The Soul of Biotech

Laughter is the best medicine — but let’s cure cancer anyway.

Who is Jonathan Sheffi?

Jonathan Sheffi is a lifelong student with a fiery passion for improving patient lives through miracles of biotechnology. He currently serves as a Senior Biopharmaceutical Representative with Amgen in the Enbrel Dermatology sales force in Portland, Oregon. Previously, he served as the Secondary Market Research Manager for the Aranesp and Sensipar brand teams at Amgen’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California. Before joining Amgen, Jonathan consulted for a variety of life science companies as a Business Analyst in Accenture’s Health and Life Sciences Strategy practice, based in San Francisco, California.

Jonathan attended MIT both as an undergraduate and as a graduate student. As an undergrad, he majored in both mathematics and computer science, and minored in biology. Jonathan’s graduate research at MIT focused on computational biology, also known as bioinformatics, and was conducted at the Broad Institute under Mark Daly and Prof. David Altshuler. His Master’s thesis, which described a novel model of human haplotype variation, was awarded the first-place David Adler Memorial Thesis Prize by the MIT EECS department for the best master’s thesis of 2004.

During Jonathan’s senior year of high school, he published ShipSmart, a software teaching tool that calculates optimal shipment size and frequency for intermodal transport options. ShipSmart helped supply-chain students in business school deeply understand the tradeoffs between inventory and transportation costs. As a freshman at MIT, Jonathan guest-lectured on ShipSmart and its underlying algorithms at the Smith School of Business, which is located at the University of Maryland at College Park. The software, source code, and all related intellectual property were sold to the University of Maryland at College Park three years later.

Jonathan has worked or consulted for many firms in the life science industry, including Amgen, Pfizer, Merck, AstraZeneca, Kaiser Permanente, Pacificare, Bio-Rad, and the Sarah Cannon Research Institute. He has also interned for Microsoft, Merrill Lynch, and OPNET Technologies.

Jonathan currently lives in Portland, Oregon. In his spare time, he solves puzzles competitively. In addition to being a sometime member of the National Puzzlers’ League, Jonathan has won the Mystery Hunt three times: once in 2002 with Acme, and then in both 2006 and 2008 with The Evil Midnight Bombers. In 2003, he also captained the winning team at Microsoft Puzzle Day. When he’s not helping patients or solving a brainteaser, Jonathan enjoys weightlifting, yoga, meditation, and rooting for his beloved Red Sox. He is also a graduate of National Bartenders School.
